How stress can impact your skin

Have you ever wondered how stress in your life cause you to break out into skin rashes, worsen your acne and eczema?

There is a clear link between stress and its effect on the skin – below Dr Cherry explains the reasons why, and how to help.

How is your skin impacted by stress?

It is no secret that skin problems can significantly impact your mental wellbeing and self- esteem. But your state of mind and level of stress can also impact skin health.

  • If your body is in constant stress, it causes internal inflammation causing your immune system to respond and react. Your skin becomes more reactive and sensitive causing redness, hives and non-specific rashes. It is logical therefore that existing inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema can flare up in times of stress.
  • Acne breakouts occur as our bodies respond to stress by producing a hormone called cortisol which increases sebum (oil) production from the skin glands.
  • When we are stressed, we tend to frown a lot with a downturn mouth. If chronically expressed, can lead to permanent lines and creases.

How can you manage stress and stress-related skin problems?

Unfortunately, there is no quick fix or secret trick; simply supporting your overall health will help restore your skin:

  1. Stick to your daily skin routine no matter how stressed you are. The minimum requirement of skincare should include cleansing, moisturising, and using sunblock.
  2. Take time for yourself and do the things you enjoy: reading, massages, listening to music, Yoga, meditate.
  3. Take time to exercise: when you exercise, your brain releases endorphins which are feel-good hormones, which will improve your energy levels, memory and sense of well-being.
  4. Get enough sleep: try and get at least 7 hours of sleep. Sleep improves your mood, concentration, energy levels and boosts your immune system.
  5. Eat and drink well: A healthy, well-balanced diet and keeping well hydrated (2-2.5L of water a day)  helps your immune system and skin health, particularly in the drying winter months.
  6. Smile!  The saying ‘fake it until you make it’ is actually true. It has been shown that the simple act of smiling can bring about feelings of happiness and reduce stress, increasing the release of happy hormones, dopamine and serotonin in the body. This helps your skin health, with the added bonus of reducing wrinkles.
