What to expect when you have a mole removed

‘Surgery’ or ‘procedure’ can be an intimidating word, but rest assured we’re not talking 10 hours under the knife. We mean simple procedures for common blemishes: skin tags, cysts, moles. All are done under local anaesthetic, and after, you can carry on with your day as before – but with renewed skin. Here’s what to expect when you have a mole removed.

Consultation prior to a mole procedure

When you have a mole removed privately, your journey starts with a consultation. This is an opportunity to ask your doctor any questions about the treatment, their qualifications and experience (such as how many times they have done this particular procedure), what happens after the treatment, what the risks are, and what results you can expect. More often than not, the mole is removed on the same day as your consultation – but of course if there is a clinical reason/you’re not ready to proceed, then the procedure can be booked in for a later date.

Pre-operative Questionnaire

There is normally a form to complete prior to the appointment. This will give the doctor the correct information to ensure you are appropriate for treatment. It also indicates if you have any contraindications for treatment ahead of time.

Wear loose-fitting clothing for your mole removal

Your doctor will need access to the area of the skin that will be treated. Your privacy is maintained at all times and a cotton gown will be provided if needed. It is always worth having a shower the night before/on the morning of the appointment as you’ll need to keep the area clean and dry for a day or so.

At the time of procedure

Your doctor will ask you medical information, your personal details, and check you are suitable for the procedure on the day. You’ll also be asked to consent to the procedure and small marks may be drawn at the site that is to be treated. A little local anaesthetic is used to make sure you do not feel and discomfort during the treatment. And of course, you are given the opportunity to ask questions at all times.

There are a few ways to remove a mole – most commonly shaving the mole off, which gives a good cosmetic outcome. Excising the mole is needed when the mole is bigger/needs to be removed for medical indications. This usually results in a couple of stitches. Your doctor will go through exactly how they are going to do this on the day of the appointment, and will check you fully understand what they are about to do.

Aftercare following a mole removal

You will be able to carry on with your day after the procedure and aftercare advice is given to you both verbally and in hard copy. You will need to keep the area clean and dry for 24-48 hours after the procedure, and sometimes avoid strenuous physical exercise if you have stitches. Stitches are not always required. At No. 23 Skin our doctors are always on hand to help afterwards if you have any questions, and follow ups are booked in when required (for example to discuss pathology testing).
