As the menopause can have a big impact on our skin, below Dr Cherry explores why these changes occur and our simple tips to help your skin during this time.
Why does our skin change through the menopause?
It’s down to our oestrogen levels. Oestrogen modulates the functions of our skin cells (keratinocytes, fibroblasts, melanocytes), hair follicles and sweat glands. As oestrogen drops in the peri-menopause and menopause, collagen production falls, oil glands are less efficient, and melanocytes (responsible for the pigmentation in our skin) are less effective.
The result is dry, thinning, wrinkling skin which is more prone to pigmentation.
The good news – there are ways we can help support our skin during this time.
If you need more support for your skin, get in touch – if you have seen changes in your skin due to the menopause, and there really is a lot we can do to help. If you are struggling with other menopausal symptoms, then don’t hesitate to contact your GP to find out how they can help too.
