Getting great, healthy skin can transform your life. But knowing where to start can be an absolute minefield. Some people defer to so called “experts” on social media telling you about the latest craze whilst dancing to a new TikTok meme. Google has the tendency to make you panic while your great-aunt Matilda swears by olive oil and egg… for EVERYTHING. So rather than reaching for the whisk, we have some tips for you from our Medical Director, Dr Armstrong, who is a GP with over 15 years’ experience of community dermatology and non-surgical cosmetics – so she really is an expert:

When I was little, I used to watch my mum slapping on Nivea cream as if it’s going out of fashion!! She always insisted that after a shower or a bath, we should moisturise (I have 2 sisters and a brother). At the time, my sisters and I moisturised because we were told to and it became a habit over the years. Now, I see the benefits of this! Without sounding like an advert (and I don’t have shares in Nivea!), we get comments about how soft our skin is all the time.

So, I want to share my basic skin care regime with you. I just don’t have time to apply multiple products but want great skin – here is a simple regime I swear by:

  • Wash your face with cool or lukewarm water
  • Moisturise with emollients (moisturisers) regularly. They will retain the moisture in the skin and replenish the fatty/ lipid barrier, keeping your skin healthy.
  • Add an active anti-ageing product (this is not essential if you are in your 20’s depending on your skin type/ condition. But essential if you have gone past that care-free age).
    • Try products with strong active ingredients with caution and use at the lowest dose first and gradually increase so that your skin can build up tolerance.
    • Use a moisturiser half an hour before adding the product with the active ingredient. This will act as a buffer to reduce the irritating effects.
  • Use an SPF 50+ cream to protect yourself from UV rays which will cause premature ageing (most importantly reduces risk of skin cancer).
  • Have regular facials/peels to improve texture and tone.

In summary: 3 essentials

  1. Moisturiser: Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise! (at least twice a day)
  2. +/- anti ageing product (eg: retinoids, Vit C serum)
  3. Sun block

I’ll also just mention the ‘Don’ts’ of skin care:

DON’T:

  • Over wash: over washing can strip away the outer protective fatty layer of the skin.
  • Use soap and hot water: soaps can contain chemicals which can strip the natural sebum/oily fatty layer.
  • Use abrasive scrubs and mechanical exfoliants which can also damage the protective layer.
  • Use multiple products at the same time.

I hope the tips are helpful!
