Hair Loss Treatment

If you are worried about your hair thinning, we can help. Whether you have tried remedies, shampoos, diets, hair transplants (or none of the above), getting a specific diagnosis and treatment plan from a specialist will optimise your hair growth — and relieve you from the frustration and distress hair loss can cause.

What to Expect

Dr Nasim Rouhani

First, come in for a consultation with Dr Nasim Rouhani. Dr Rouhani is a consultant dermatologist who has sub-specialised in hair disorders. In the NHS she is the lead clinician for hair disorders in London and regularly undertakes research and clinical trials to keep her expertise at the forefront of her field. She knows her stuff.

Within the consultation three things will happen:

  1. Dr Rouhani will review your scalp with a dermatoscope (microscope for the skin) to see exactly what is happening. She will also use trichometry to understand your hair density and mass, so we can track progress effectively.
  2. Images are normally taken to check and review progress at a later date. Occasionally a blood test or a small sample of your scalp may be required to send to the lab for further testing.
  3. Your will be provided with a diagnosis and comprehensive treatment plan – this may include topical or oral medications, injections into the scalp, or a combination of methods depending on what your diagnosis is.

After three months (or sooner if required) you will be required to attend for a follow up to check things are growing back as your dermatologist expects them to.

Hair Disorders

The medical term for hair loss is alopecia. There are a few common hair disorders that we see, including:

Male Pattern Baldness

An extremely common condition, but by no means any less distressing, Male Pattern Baldness impacts a large proportion of men – from the teenage years to older age.  Pattern hair loss is apparent in 50% of individuals by the age of 50 years and is due to genetic programming or hormonal influences.

Female Pattern Baldness

Another common condition, it is usually located on the top and front of the scalp and whilst it can be inherited it is also influenced by hormones – including post-menopause.

Alopecia Areata

Affecting children and adults of all skin and hair colours, alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition (where inflammation is impacting the hair follicles) that typically shows as patches of hair loss. The cause of this inflammation is often unknown but stress may play a part.

Telogen Hair Loss

Excessive shedding of hair is known as telogen effluvium and can be caused post-pregnancy, by a fever, weight loss, haemorrhage, surgery, stress, and medications.
