Pigmentation Treatment

What is Pigmentation?

Melanin gives skin its natural colour. Too much of it causes pigmentation. Those brown spots on your skin? Chances are it’s pigmentation. UV light is the main culprit, which is why it often appears post-holiday or sunbed use. Hormones and acne are also common causes.

The virtues of wearing SPF daily and year-round are many, including preventing dark patches from UV-light exposure. But there are treatments available if you’re after a cure – no matter what caused your pigmentation.

Two of the most effective use leading technology that have been clinically approved: Sciton Broadband Light (BBL) and microneedling. Both are offered by us because we know they work and are safe. Chemical peels and exfoliants, and lightening creams are other options.

The right pigmentation treatment for you depends on your needs and your skin’s needs.

Delve into the details below.

The gold standard: Sciton Broadband Light (BBL)

The benchmark for pigmentation. BBL uses gentle light beams to bring dark spots to the surface and remove them.

Is it for me?

Perfect for those who want instant results and minimal downtime. The only drawback is you must avoid UV-light exposure before and after, as skin will be photosensitive. SPF is also necessary.

Good for multiple skin concerns: microneedling

SkinPen microneedling treats pigmentation, as well as scarring and skin texture. FDA-approved, it uses tiny needles to stimulate the body’s natural healing power. Collagen is produced as part of the recovery process, encouraging skin tone to even out.

Is it for me?

Suitable for all skin types, and it’s good for treating lots of issues at once. Skin will take 24-48 hours to heal though, and may be red during recovery.

Ideal treatment for light pigmentation: chemical peels & exfoliants

Home treatments include products with AHAs, salicylic acid, and azelaic acid (also good for breakouts). Professional peels are offered in clinic, and stimulate cell turnover, which reduces pigmentation if done regularly.

Is it for me?

If you have little pigmentation and want a light treatment that’s suitable for all skin types, then yes. A word of caution: over-foliating with these actives can make skin sensitive, so speak to your dermatologist or doctor first.

The long game: lightening creams

Lightening creams are an option if recommended by your doctor. They contain hydroquinone, which decreases melanin in your skin – remember, too much melanin leads to pigmentation. The skin then ‘lightens’, as dark skin cells shed. A Dermatology Consultation is needed if this is the route you want to opt for.

Is it for me?

Patience is needed, as lightening creams take possibly months of consistent use before full results. They also have to be prescribed, so aren’t for everyone.
