Finding a dermatologist appointment can feel like a bit of a minefield – read on to find out how to choose the right person so your skin gets back to its best, fast.

So, when do you see a dermatologist? There’s really no right or wrong answer. Some people come to us after referrals from their GPs. Others, when they feel all other options have been exhausted. Most come to us as their first port of call, seeking the expertise of a dermatologist.

If you’re thinking of booking a private dermatologist, follow these simple steps to make sure they are for you:

  1. What condition do you want addressed? You may have a clear idea of what is happening, or maybe you don’t have an inkling – your skin may be sore without reason. Researching the clinic and making sure they have experience in your condition or in a wide range will help give you the confidence that they know what they’re talking about and can diagnose your condition quickly. Also read patient reviews – there are a lot of dermatologists in London and most have Google Reviews so it’s worth checking them out there.
  2. Understand the consultation process. Are they easy to get hold of, do they take the time to answer all your questions on the phone/via email before even the appointment starts? If they’re responsive and knowledgable then that is a good start. Don’t hesitate to ask questions about how it works too – a lot of people we see are first timers to private healthcare and guiding you on the journey is a big part of the overall treatment.  You may be asked to bring certain documents or test results with you, but this should be simple and not be made intimidating or laborious. You don’t want to jump through a lot of hoops before you see the doctor.
  3. Check the clinic is registered with the CQC. The CQC is there to regulate safety in the medical industry and all medical providers (NHS and private) are legally required to be monitored by them. It is a bit like Ofsted but for medical clinics.CQC logo
  4. Confirm medical insurance cover. If you have medical insurance you may be entitled to cover by them for your appointment/treatment. Sometimes the clinic can send this to the insurance company directly, or you can reclaim with a printed invoice. It is worth noting that if you have a large excess it may be better to self pay.
  5. Check out the clinic location and availability – are they close by, and do they have good availability to see you? Sounds obvious, but you may be required to attend more than once so you need it to be relatively convenient to get the most out of your treatment.
