what is rosacea

Rosacea/Redness

If your face blushes easily, is red, hot, or irritated, then you may have rosacea. We it is frustrating, and can hamper your self-esteem. Getting the right rosacea treatment can be life-changing. There are treatment options available.

First, what are the symptoms?

  • Red patches on the face, especially on the central part of the face
  • Visible facial blood vessels
  • Irritated, dry, hot and tender skin
  • Small, pus filled bumps (often mistaken for acne)

What causes it?

The cause of rosacea is unknown, but there is a strong theory that it is to do with the functioning of the immune system of the skin. The skin’s defenses are over-reactive, so it is often worsened by pollution, heat, stress, alcohol, caffeine, and spicy food.

What helps treat rosacea at home?

  • Use a gentle cleanser (and don’t double cleanse)
  • Avoid physical exfoliation
  • Cut down on alcohol, especially red wine
  • De-stress when you can
  • Wear SPF50 every day as UV rays can worsen it
  • Avoid spicy food

What rosacea treatments can we do in clinic?

  • Prescribe topical medications to calm the skin.
  • Prescribe oral antibiotics and in more severe cases, isotretinoin and alpha blockers (which can control flushing).
  • IPL laser treatments to reduce the redness – after a year of searching for the right bit of kit, we invested in the Sciton BBL as it is very effective at treating rosacea in a couple of sessions.

If you think you may have rosacea, or need help with your skin, please get in touch. We know it can be daunting – particularly if it is something you have struggled with for a while. But we’re here every step of the way.
