Mole Removal

Moles are a common skin feature and are usually harmless. However, they can sometimes feel unsightly, catch on clothing, or, following a dermatologist’s check, be identified as at risk of skin cancer. The good news? Removing a mole is a quick and straightforward procedure.

‘Surgery’ might sound intimidating, but rest assured, we’re not talking about hours under the knife. These are simple, effective treatments for common moles and blemishes that our expert dermatologists perform daily. Good To Know

What is a mole?

Moles are clusters of pigment-producing cells (melanocytes) that appear on the skin as small, dark spots. They can vary in size, shape, and colour, and while most moles are harmless, some can cause discomfort, catch on clothing, or raise concerns following a dermatologist’s check.

When a mole needs to be removed, there are several simple and effective procedures available, each tailored to the mole’s size, location, and purpose for removal:

  • Shave Excision:
A quick and minimally invasive method where the mole is carefully shaved off using a sterile blade. This technique is often used for raised moles and typically leaves minimal scarring.
  • Curettage:
A method where the mole is scraped off the skin’s surface using a special instrument called a curette. This approach is ideal for superficial moles or blemishes.
  • Surgical Excision:
A more precise method for deeper moles, this involves cutting out the mole and a small margin of surrounding tissue. The wound is then stitched to promote healing and minimize scarring.

All procedures include local anaesthetic to keep you comfortable.

FAQs

How do I know if a mole needs to be removed?

Moles can be removed for cosmetic, comfort, or medical reasons. If you notice changes in size, shape, or colour, it’s essential to get it checked.

What is shave excision?

Shave excision involves carefully removing the mole with a blade, often under local anesthetic. This method is quick, precise, and leaves minimal scarring. The type of mole removal that is best for you will be discussed with you by the Consultant, together you will decide the best way forwards to reduce any risk of scarring, whilst removing the mole completely – this is particularly important when the mole is removed for medical reasons.

Does Mole Removal Hurt?

Our methods are minimally invasive and typically pain-free thanks to local anesthetic. Some patients may feel slight discomfort during recovery and we always provide in-depth follow up care and support.

Are there any risks involved?

All procedures at No. 23 Skin are carried out by qualified specialists. While rare, potential risks include minor redness or irritation, which usually resolve quickly. You will be provided with a comprehensive after care sheet with contact details and instructions on how to optimise healing.

Will the mole grow back?

Once removed, moles typically don’t grow back. However, new moles can form, so regular skin checks are recommended.

How do I prepare for my appointment?

Wear comfortable clothing and avoid applying creams or makeup to the area. Our team will guide you through any additional steps during your consultation. Remember not to book in a workout or swimming in the days following the appointment because you will need to keep the area clean an dry. It is also advised to have a shower/wash your hair on the day of the appointment.

What is the recovery like after the mole removal?

In general, patients can expect some redness and swelling around the site of removal, which subsides quickly. If you have stitches then they will either need to be removed approximately 10 days later, or may be dissolvable. Most of the removals do not need stitches.

What will the area look like as it heals?

Immediately after treatment and after the scab has fallen off (naturally- not to be picked), it will be pink (a bit like when you graze yourself). It is very important to keep the area hydrated after the appointment with vaseline or Kelocote scar gel/tape.

Generally, two weeks after the removal the area will start to re-pigment. This occurs more quickly on the face due to UV. No two moles or skin is the same, so these are general guidelines. Your dermatologist will talk you through it before the mole removal so you understand the process fully.

How can I tell if the mole is cancerous?

It is important to have any suspicious moles examined by a qualified dermatologist – particularly those that have changed at all in size, shape or colour. Whilst the dermatologist will look at your mole through a microscope before removal to provide you with their diagnosis – we will always send off your mole to the lab to check for any abnormalities. This is best medical practice and should be followed.

How much is it to have a mole removed?

Prices are £605 for a single mole and £705 for two within the same session. Please contact us for a quite specific to your skin. It may be that you have a skin tag, in which case the cost is £205.

What if I decide not to go ahead after meeting the Doctor?
