Good To Know
What is a mole?
Moles are clusters of pigment-producing cells (melanocytes) that appear on the skin as small, dark spots. They can vary in size, shape, and colour, and while most moles are harmless, some can cause discomfort, catch on clothing, or raise concerns following a dermatologist’s check.
When a mole needs to be removed, there are several simple and effective procedures available, each tailored to the mole’s size, location, and purpose for removal:
- Shave Excision:
A quick and minimally invasive method where the mole is carefully shaved off using a sterile blade. This technique is often used for raised moles and typically leaves minimal scarring. - Curettage:
A method where the mole is scraped off the skin’s surface using a special instrument called a curette. This approach is ideal for superficial moles or blemishes. - Surgical Excision:
A more precise method for deeper moles, this involves cutting out the mole and a small margin of surrounding tissue. The wound is then stitched to promote healing and minimize scarring.
All procedures include local anaesthetic to keep you comfortable.
