Dermatologist vs Skin Clinic vs Facialist: What’s the Difference — And Who Should You See?

Why This Matters

London is full of skin clinics — but not all skin experts are medically trained.

If you’ve ever wondered who to trust for acne, pigmentation, moles, or ageing skin, here’s the definitive guide.

You may not be sure what your skin needs, and often we find it is a combination of priorities or goals. Our recommendation is always to find out what is going on medically before pursuing cosmetic treatments to ensure you optimise the results.

1. What Is a Dermatologist (and Why It Matters)

A dermatologist is a medical doctor who has:

  • 10+ years of medical + specialist training

  • Expertise in diagnosing disease and the science behind skin changes

  • Advanced understanding of inflammation, skin cancer, hormones, lasers, and ageing

Dermatologists treat:

  • Acne

  • Rosacea

  • Psoriasis

  • Eczema

  • Melasma

  • Skin cancer

  • Complex rashes

  • Pigmentation and scarring

  • And for those who decide to do additional training – Cosmetic dermatology

They’re your go-to for anything “diagnostic,” persistent, or unexplained.

2. What a Skin Clinic Is

Some are medically led.
Some are beauty-led.
Some say “dermatology-inspired” (a red flag).

Look for:

  • Dermatologist involvement (our dermatology team is here if you would like to take a quick look)

  • Evidence-based treatments

  • Clear medical governance – safety first, always. Our safety information can be found here.

  • Transparent staff qualifications

At No. 23 Skin, medical dermatology is the foundation — everything else builds from that.

3. What they do: Skin Clinic vs Dermatologist

They can support skin health but cannot diagnose or treat medical conditions.

Skin clinicians are brilliant at:

  • Optimising hydration within your skin.

  • Glow

  • Maintenance – if you have been treated by a dermatologist and are keen to keep your skin in tip top condition, then skin clinics can help you here

  • Pre-event skin: a glow up really can work.

Not suitable for:

  • Cystic Acne

  • Rosacea (unless with the support of a dermatologist as certain laser treatments can help)

  • Pigmentation

  • Moles

  • Scarring

  • Persistent sensitivity

4. Dermatologist vs Skin Clinic

You need a medical dermatologist if:

  • Something has changed (very important in the case of moles)

  • Something hurts, bleeds, or persists

  • You’ve tried over-the-counter solutions or you have been to your GP and nothing is helping

  • You want a long-term plan, not a quick fix

  • Find our more about a Dermatology Consultation here.

You need a facialist or skin clinic if:

  • Your skin is generally healthy

  • You want maintenance

  • You want relaxation and a glow – check out our skin treatments here.

  • You’re treating a medical concern under the advice of the dermatologist but with lasers etc.

You need a medically-led skin clinic if:

  • You want a blend of treatment and prevention

  • You care about long-term skin health, not perfection

  • You want evidence-based care, not hype

Your skin is meant to be lived in — choose the right partner to look after it through every chapter.

I have spent over 15 years in this industry and we have a fabulous team of dermatologists, doctors and aesthetic practitioners. I am happy to help and answer any questions about your skin so I can direct you to the right place. That may be us, or it may not. It could be the NHS too (they have a good guide on moles). Honesty and getting you the right support for your skin is my absolute priority.
