How to Find a Dermatologist in London

Finding a dermatologist in London can be a challenging process. There are so many options – from those who are big on social media and crowded front doors on Harley Street, to skin “experts” who aren’t doctors but who claim to be one. It can feel like a minefield.

How Do You Choose a Dermatologist Who is Right for You?

As someone who has worked in the field for many years, I’d start by asking yourself what you really want or need for you skin:

Have You Got a Medical Need to See a Dermatologist?

Is your skin red, sore, itchy, breaking out, changing in any way? If the answer is yes, start with a qualified professional. Keep reading for a quick checklist on what to look for/ask when calling.

Do You Want to Improve the Overall Health or Quality of Your Skin with a Dermatologist?

Look carefully if you fall into this group – maybe you get a few rashes now and then, or a breakout here and there, but generally your skin isn’t what it used to be and you’d like to sort that.

A lot of dermatologists will only focus on the medical concern (understandably because this is their training), but won’t take it one step further and go through your treatment options once the ‘medical’ step is fixed. For example, you have had acne – the acne has been treated so technically you dont have any medical need for a dermatologist. BUT, what about the scarring you are left with? Or your rash has gone, but what about the dry skin left? Check they can treat your full skin journey if that’s what you’re looking for.

Are you Looking for Cosmetic Dermatology Only?

If you know you are looking for enhancements such as injectables, profhilo, lasers – you may not need a dermatologist as there are some great doctors out there who are highly skilled at bringing about great results. But PLEASE make sure they are a doctor. Sounds simple, but medics have to adhere to high standards of care – and if anything goes awry they know how to fix it.

Checklist to Find the Right Dermatologist Near You

  1. Ask friends and read reviews on the dermatologist/clinic you think you’ll visit. Bear in mind what is good for a friend may not be right for you. So follow the steps below too.
  2. Is the clinician a doctor/dermatologist? You can check them out on the GMC register if you’re unsure.
  3. Is the clinic CQC registered? Any clinic offering medical services MUST be registered with the CQC by law. So this is important. You can check it here.
  4. Call/contact the clinic. When you do, think about:
    • Were they responsive to your call/email (a good indication on how reactive they can be going forwards)
    • What was their telephone manner like – were you reassured by their knowledge?
    • Did they answer your questions/explain they will ask the dermatologist if it is not something they could answer right away?
    • On that point – always ask questions when you call a dermatologist’s office. It is likely that the consultation is £200-300, so you want to get the most out of it.
    • What is the availability of the dermatologist like? Can you see then at your convenience? If they are only in once a week it may be fine if you’re having your annual skin check/review, but for more ongoing conditions you may want their time to be more accessible.
    • Can you reach the dermatologist between appointments? Will they pick up calls/emails if needed?
  5. Check how payment works. If you are having a procedure, what’s included? Some clinics charge the cost in three parts: the consultant’s fee, the facility fee, and the lab tests (we don’t). There may also be separate charges for consultations and treatment so double check to avoid nasty surprises. All doctors are required to tell you the cost prior to treatment, and you’re entitled to a cooling off period so don’t feel pressured to go right ahead.
  6. Where are they located? Is it discreet/accessible for you. I prefer not to spill straight out onto a High Street after an appointment, but for you it may be that you need wheelchair access, or to be near a tube.

Conclusion

Finding the right Dermatologist for you can be tricky, but if you focus on their experience, reviews, team ethos, approachability, and accessibility – you’ll be on the right track.
