Finding a Private Dermatologist: Why is it Confusing?
You’re searching for a private dermatologist and suddenly you’re met with a bunch of options that all look the same, but are they really? Why are the prices different? What are the different specialties?
You’re not alone.
We often encounter patients who are bewildered by the array of titles and qualifications within the field of dermatology. From dermatologic surgeons to cosmetic dermatologists and skin experts, the options can seem overwhelming. In this post, I aim to shed light on why finding the right dermatologist can be confusing and clarify the differences between various specialists.
How to Find a Dermatologist that Works for You?
Understanding the Specialisations: Dermatology is a multifaceted field encompassing medical, surgical, and cosmetic aspects. Medical dermatologists diagnose and treat skin conditions ranging from acne to skin cancer. They are trained to manage complex dermatologic diseases. Surgical dermatologists, on the other hand, specialize in procedures such as Mohs surgery for skin cancer removal. Cosmetic dermatologists focus on enhancing the appearance of the skin through procedures like wrinkle injections and laser treatments.
Educational Background: Dermatologists undergo extensive medical training before specialising in dermatology. After completing medical school, they undertake two foundation years in different settings, followed by speciality training in dermatology, which typically lasts six or seven years. Some dermatologists pursue additional fellowship training in areas like dermatopathology or procedural dermatology. Understanding a dermatologist’s educational background can provide insight into their expertise and areas of interest. For example, here at No. 23 Skin, Dr Maria Roest specialises in Skin Cancer, Dr Nasim Rouhani specialises in hair loss. Other people enter dermatology through community primary care – this is usually where long term, chronic conditions are seen. Dr Cherry Armstrong, at No. 23 Skin, specialises in acne treatment for this reason.
Certifications and Memberships: In the UK, dermatologists are be certified by the Royal College of Physicians or the British Association of Dermatologists. Membership in professional organizations like the British Association of Dermatologists or the American Academy of Dermatology can also indicate a commitment to ongoing education and adherence to ethical standards.
Experience and Reputation: When selecting a dermatologist, consider their experience and reputation. Look for reviews from previous patients, and inquire about their experience treating your specific skin concerns. A dermatologist with a strong track record and positive patient feedback is likely to provide high-quality care.
Communication and Personal Connection: Effective communication is essential for a successful doctor-patient relationship. Choose a dermatologist who takes the time to listen to your concerns, explains treatment options clearly, and involves you in decision-making. A compassionate and approachable demeanor can make a significant difference in your overall experience. We know that discussing your medical concerns can be daunting, but your dermatologist is there to make it easy to ensure you get results quickly.
Clarity of Fees: Wondered why one person costs more than another? It may be due to fancy marketing and just because they can, or it may be due to a specific additional qualification. It is worth asking the questions and making sure you are paying a fair price. My personal view is that we need to respect the training and qualifications of the dermatologists, whilst ensuring high standards of customer care is adhered to. After all, it is not cheap wherever you go and you have a right to be looked after rather than feel as though it is “one in, one out”.
Procedures are something to keep a watch out for. For example, a mole removal may have hidden costs within it such as pathology testing, and a separate fee for the procedure, consultation, follow up and hospital fee. That’s 4 or 5 elements to be billed for. Which is why we always put everything in one easy price to understand.
In conclusion, navigating the world of dermatology can indeed be confusing, but armed with the right information, you can make informed decisions about your skin health. Whether you’re seeking treatment for a medical condition or considering cosmetic enhancements, understanding the different types of dermatologists and their specialties is the first step towards finding the right provider for your needs.
Remember to prioritise qualifications, experience, and personal rapport when selecting a dermatologist, and don’t hesitate to ask questions along the way. Your skin deserves nothing less than the best care possible.
I know it can be confusing – I have been working in the field for years so if you need support or guidance then please reach out – it may be that one of our dermatologists can help you, or I can point you in the right direction if not.

I’m not exactly a massive skincare person and, having never been to a dermatologist before, I was definitely a bit out of my element. However, the team at 23 Skin was incredibly friendly and made me feel welcome right away.
Shannon was great, she talked me through the whole process and made sure I was comfortable the entire time. Dr Cherry was also very professional. She explained the logic behind my minor surgery, ensured I knew exactly what to expect, and gave me clear instructions for aftercare. They even set up a follow-up appointment to make sure everything was healing properly.
If you’re looking for a professional & friendly team that makes the whole experience easy and stress-free, I can’t recommend them enough

Lovely discreet clinic with welcoming staff, I had a BBL laser treatment and facial with Shannon, and she was really detail-oriented and personable, answered all my questions with no pushy sales approach. The treatment was explained really well, and she was clearly very knowledgeable, so I felt very comfortable the entire time. Shannon emailed the next day to check in, which I thought was great customer service - would highly recommend!

Excellent, expert advice by people who care. Words cannot express the level of attention and passion you find at this clinic. I have been struggling with my skin for as long as I can remember, dealing with acne and eczema as early as 11 years old. Shannon and Dr Cherry have helped me finally feel in control of my skin.
Recently, I completed the AviClear course with the lovely Shannon and I'm already noticing improvements. I definitely have less cystic spots and oiliness. In my consultation with Dr Armstrong, I received a detailed, thoughtful treatment plan as well. She listened to my concerns and answered all my questions with zero judgement (even if I asked the same question 100 times).
It is evident that everyone here is passionate about what they do and that is felt so strongly by the effort and empathy in their work. I refuse to trust my skin anywhere else. Thank you so much!!! I can't wait for my follow up!

The doctor was friendly and professional, the location is very convenient and discrete. There was a small hiccup in the admin process but the staff was friendly and quick to fix it.

Words cannot express how grateful I am to have found No. 23 Skin. I’ve been coming here to see Shannon for several years now for the signature facial treatments, and my skin looks unrecognisable.
The team is exceptionally attentive and are genuinely invested in your skin’s long-term health rather than focusing on the quick fixes. What I particularly value is also their honesty as they will never push products or treatments you don’t need, and their recommendations are always based on what will actually work for your skin which makes all the difference.
Every treatment feels incredibly tailored and they always take the time to explain what products they are using and why, which as someone with very sensitive skin immediately puts you at ease.
If you’re struggling with acne or want lasting results I cannot recommend No. 23 Skin highly enough. It has been a complete game-changer for my skin and is truly the best decision I’ve made: If there were an option to give more than five stars I would without hesitation.

I highly recommend No23 Skin if you’re looking for a dermatologist in London. I went for an in depth skin treatment which started by the wonderful Shannon actually taking the time to find out any concerns I have with my skin to tailor the treatment I needed. I left with my skin glowing and the tightness lasted for several days after with lots of compliments from friends so it truly worked. The before and aftercare was amazing and detailed. Shannon wrote me some notes before I left the Clinic and gave me some products to apply and it was followed through with an email reminder of how to care for my skin over the next few days after my micro needling. The London clinic is a short walk away from High Street Kensington tube station and is super convenient to get to. It’s also located near plenty of shops for a before or after treat. If you need a dermatologist in London then look no further than No23 Skin. I’ve already booked to go back!

I had a review session with Dr Cherry a couple of weeks ago and followed by a BBL session with Shannon. Dr Cherry is lovely and confirmed that all was OK so that was reassuring. Shannon is so professional and thought a BBL treatment would be ideal for my face which has uneven pigmentation. Two weeks on I am absolutely delighted. My skin tone is much more even and looks so much more 'alive'. Thank you to all at No23 Skin Clinic
