Looking to book a private dermatologist? We hear you. Here’s a quick guide to finding someone who will help your skin.
You are able to see a private dermatologist without a referral from your GP (unless you’re claiming on insurance, when it is best to check with them). We find that that the sooner you reach out the better – for example, this can reduce the angst around acne breakouts, prevent scarring in certain conditions, and get early treatment for skin cancer if needed. Experienced dermatologists will reassure and guide you to the best treatment – no issue is too small (or too big).
This can include reviewing their bio, checking google reviews, and checking the gmc register to make sure they are a medical doctor (you would be surprised). Ask around, but do your own homework. Someone great at clearing your neighbour’s breakouts may not necessarily be the same person who will successfully treat your mole.
It is worth asking their admin team about what the dermatologist treats. Most will be able to see general skin conditions, be some specialise in areas such as hair, skin cancer or acne.
Also consider that a majority of dermatologists work privately part time. This can vary from one day a month, week or greater. You may need a procedure or follow up appointments and if this is the case, it may be best to seek someone who you can easily find time with.
Your dermatologist will be able to prescribe you the medications that you need to treat your condition. It is worth mentioning that these prescriptions are private and therefore you pay for the medications in the pharmacy (not just the prescription charge as per the NHS). This can range from a few pounds to £100+. Your dermatologist should be able to give you an indication on whether it is an expensive medication.
There are other options in this case – for example, it may be that they can write to your GP to prescribe via the NHS now you know what is needed (this depends on the medication).
We get asked this question a lot and it varies from dermatologist to dermatologist, but on the whole it is from 20-40mins, depending on what you are in for. Sometimes diagnosis and a treatment plan can be made quickly, in other cases more time is needed, but the time is there to ask questions and seek all the reassurance you need about next steps.
