‘Surgery’ can be an intimidating word, but rest assured we’re not talking 10 hours under the knife. We mean simple procedures for common blemishes: skin tags, cysts, moles. All are done under local anaesthetic, and after, you can carry on with your day as before – but with better-looking skin.
One of the most common reasons people decide to have a mole removed is because they are embarrassed by it – they have tried to cover it with make-up, or to accept it like Cindy Crawford, but usually it has been bothering them for so long that they just want it gone. There may also be medical reasons to remove a mole – such as when it catches on clothing, or if it needs a biopsy due to changes in size, shape or colour.
Fortunately, mole removal is simple and comfortable. The dermatologist goes through the procedure so you fully understand what it entails, and to reassure the most anxious of patient that it has minimal recovery time and is at very low risk of any complications.
There are a few ways to remove a mole – including excision by cutting around it, but more commonly by shaving it off. The latter doesn’t require stitches and heals quickly. Both include a little local anaesthetic injection to numb the area (like you would get in the dentist, only more comfortable given it is not in your mouth) so you only feel slight pressure during the procedure. Afterwards you have a small dressing and you are required to keep the wound clean and dry for the next 24-48 hours. Individual after-care advice is provided so you know exactly what to do.
It is important to emphasise that mole removal is a safe and routine procedure that is performed by dermatologists every day.
If you’re looking for a safe place to get your mole removed, our Kensington clinic is warm, professional and regulated by the Care Quality Commission, meaning we have the relevant checks, medical qualifications and cleanliness in place to ensure a good result.
And because we know how nerve-racking it can be to go through anything surgical (no matter how small), we’ll do everything we can to put you at ease.
