Rashes and Dry Skin: How to help from a Dermatologist

dry skin eczema

As winter blankets us in its chilly embrace, our skin often pays the price, succumbing to the harsh elements and resulting in unwelcome companions – rashes and dryness. As a dermatologist clinic, we understand the concerns many of you have during this season. In this post, we’ll explore the causes of winter skin issues and, more importantly, practical steps to keep your skin healthy and radiant.

Understanding the Culprits:

  1. Low Humidity: Winter air is notorious for its lack of moisture, leading to low humidity levels. This dry air can rob your skin of its natural oils, leaving it parched and prone to irritation.
  2. Hot Showers: While tempting in the cold season, hot showers can strip your skin of essential oils, exacerbating dryness. Opt for lukewarm water to keep your skin happy.
  3. Heavy Fabrics: Winter wardrobes often consist of heavy, woolen fabrics that can be abrasive and irritating to sensitive skin. Choose soft, breathable materials to minimize friction.

Combatting Dryness and Rashes:

  1. Hydration is Key: Drink plenty of water to hydrate your skin from the inside out. Also, consider using a humidifier at home to counteract the dry indoor air.
  2. Gentle Cleansing: Opt for a mild, fragrance-free cleanser to avoid stripping your skin of essential oils. Cleansing twice a day is sufficient to maintain cleanliness.
  3. Moisturise, Moisturise, Moisturise: Invest in a rich, hydrating moisturizer and apply it liberally, especially after bathing. Look for products containing ingredients like hyaluronic acid and glycerin for an added moisture boost. For skin that is prone to eczema, we particularly like Aveeno and Doublebase Once.
  4. Protective Clothing: Shield your skin from harsh winter winds by wearing layers and covering exposed areas. Don’t forget sunscreen – yes, even in winter, UV rays can be potent.
  5. Mindful Showering: Short, lukewarm showers are your skin’s best friend in winter. Pat your skin dry instead of rubbing vigorously and apply moisturizer immediately after.
  6. Consult a Professional: If rashes persist or worsen, it’s crucial to consult a dermatologist. Professional advice can help identify specific triggers and tailor a skincare routine to your unique needs.

Eczema tends to flare up at this time of year – so here are our top 4 rules for avoiding or reducing eczema flare-ups

  1. Arm yourself with soap substitutes, good moisturisers (ones you’re happy to use), sunblock and antihistamines.
  2. Manage your stress as effectively as possible with strategies that work for you e.g. regular exercise, yoga, Pilates and meditation.
  3. Avoid food and other allergens that you know can worsen your eczema.
  4. Be mindful of – and try to pre-empt if possible – hormonal changes likely to cause flare-ups.

Remember, maintaining healthy skin in winter is a combination of external care and internal hydration. By adopting these simple practices, you can bid farewell to the winter skin blues and welcome a season of healthy, glowing skin. Stay radiant!
