Acne was devastating to me. It hampered my social and work life. It made me feel like I was never good enough.
It took me a huge amount of research, time working alongside dermatologists, and tens of thousands of pounds of investment into opening a new clinic to get the treatment I was looking for – and where I felt comfortable.
Acne was something I struggled with for 20 years. From the age of 13 when teenage acne really took hold, through my teens, twenties, and when I was pregnant with my two children.
At the worst of it I would avoid going out, wouldn’t remove my make-up if I was staying at someone’s house, and reapply yet more concealer first thing in the morning (especially in the early stages of dating). In fact, I think it was a good few months until my (now) husband saw me without make up on.
I seriously damaged my skin from hours of sunbathing so a tan would cover up my spots, and I even remember trying white spirit to strip it (don’t try this), resulting in a very red face.
I was terribly embarrassed. I worked alongside the dermatologists who could help me but kept quiet. I was daunted by the medical professionals and didn’t want to bother them with my spots – even though it was on my mind 24 hours a day.
There are a lot of options out there for treating acne. But finding the right one is hard.
In my early thirties, I partnered with Dr Armstrong with the goal to open a clinic that prioritises skin health (regardless of your starting point) AND takes away the shame of visiting the doctor. Somewhere I would be comfortable to visit.
Fortunately, my skin is now in great health. It’s fresh, dewy, glowing, and I only need a swipe of concealer under my eyes (blame the child who doesn’t sleep!). Yes, I get the odd spot now and again, but the progress is astronomical. I really wish I knew what I do now, 15-20 years ago.
