Safety in the non-surgical cosmetics industry

The report on the impact of body image on mental and physical health – by the health and social care committee was published last week.

We welcome the report as it addresses the lack of regulation in the non-surgical cosmetics.

At the moment you could pretty much get your cosmetic treatments (including fillers) done anywhere by anyone – back of a hairdressers, at home, in a cupboard. Scary thought.

Legally we hold high (and tightly regulated) standards. And here’s why.

  • The work we do is covers both medical – from skin cancer to acne to rashes – and non-surgical cosmetic, which includes peels, botox, fillers, and microneedling among others. We deem both as being important for overall skin health and wellbeing. And the report above references that “when performed appropriately” cosmetic “procedures can improve confidence, lessen the burden of mental health challenges, and improve individual wellbeing. Conversely, poorly performed procedures can add to these challenges on both an individual and a societal level.”.
  • Our medical services mean that legally we have to be registered with the CQC and adhere to high training, safety, and infection prevention standards – even for our cosmetic services, which elsewhere would be unregulated.
  • It’s the right thing to do – patient safety comes first in everything we do.

This new government report calls for tighter regulation across the board – including making some services prescription only, making sure clinics that are not CQC registered have higher hygiene standards, training is better, and that advertising is not mis-represented. All good news.

A note on advertising – many people ask us for before and after shots. Whilst we have a few, it is not something we push out much – and this is deliberate choice for two reasons – 1, the discretion of our clients is one of our priorities. And 2, everyone is unique – so the results for one person will be different to the results on another.

One thing you can be reassured of though is that we will always, always, keep the health of your skin as the priority and within our cosmetic services we focus on replacing what’s lost to make you look great, and not done.

So, whether you have a medical or a cosmetic need – we’re here for you with the highest of safety standards. And if you’re looking at the safety of other clinics – seeing they are CQC registered is a good start.
