Spring Skin – How to Adjust Your Routine for Warmer Weather

Spring. Finally.

Longer mornings. Lighter evenings. A diary that suddenly fills itself. Skin that’s seen a bit more daylight (and perhaps a bit less central heating).

At No. 23 Skin, we believe in skin that should be lived in. That means protecting it properly so you can sit outside, run in the park, or book that Greek escape — without quietly accumulating damage.

With thanks to Consultant Dermatologist Dr Dhariwal for her input.

Here’s what we’re changing this season.

At Home Skincare

  1. SPF – up the SPF usage (you have all been using it already… right?). Even if it doesn’t feel warm, the UV rays can still damage your skin. Use a separate SPF to your moisturiser/make up to ensure good coverage. We love La Roche Posay or Heliocare.
  2. Switch to lighter moisturisers. Why? As there is less heating/aircon our skin has a little reprieve from their drying nature. If you are on the oilier side, then think about a lotion over a cream at this point. We like the Effeclar Duo+M as it also has niacinamide in it (great for barrier support). As does Iso-Biome by Effaclar if you need more moisture.
  3. Add a bit of colour! Ok, so this is preference rather than medical advice, but we love a bit of tinted moisturiser at this time of year. Dr Dhariwal and I use Veil by Hourglass, and Shannon sticks to Erborian.
  4. If you use retinol at night, do remember that it makes your skin photosensitive (can burn more easily). If you’re spending extended time in strong sun — skiing, sailing, Mediterranean weekends — consider pausing temporarily.
  5. Stay hydrated. Your skin is an organ and 60%+ water – it needs to get that internally to be in its best shape.

fundamentals of skin health

In Clinic: Spring Reset, Done Properly

  1. Old-school facials. I was delighted to see the Sunday Times Stylist suggest that an old-school facial is back in. It’s never gone out of style for us…. for a proper “spring clean” feeling there is nothing better than one of our signature facials.A unique mix of peels (better for fine lines), hand extraction (best for deep-cleansing), mask (hydration, hydration, hydration), and LED light therapy (goodbye, inflammation), our facials give you fresh, dewy skin from the inside out.

  2. We are mid-peak season for laser treatments – clearing redness, pigmentation, and smoothing texture, start now for fab skin this summer. The BBL treatment is our go-to.
  3. As we strip off in the heat (perhaps wishful thinking, but I’m an optimist)… time for a mole check. Most common place for a melanoma for a man is on their torso and for a woman on the back of the calf – but they can appear anywhere. My husband had mole check recently; Dr Bhate discovered some unusual features in the mole and it appears to be spreading, so we need to remove it for early treatment… could be down to sunbeds in his youth taking their toll. If you’ve used sunbeds in the past, had significant sun exposure, or simply haven’t had a professional check recently — get in touch.
