IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) and BBL (Broadband Light) therapies are both non-invasive treatments that use light energy to improve the appearance of the skin. While they share some similarities, they also have some key differences that are worth exploring.
Let’s start with IPL. This type of therapy uses a broad spectrum of light to treat a range of skin concerns, including hyperpigmentation, rosacea, and acne. IPL works by targeting the melanin in the skin, which absorbs the light and converts it into heat. This heat then destroys the targeted cells, leaving behind clearer, more even-toned skin. IPL will also stimulate collagen production, which can improve skin texture and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
BBL, on the other hand, uses a specific range of wavelengths to target different skin concerns. Like IPL, BBL can be used to treat hyperpigmentation, rosacea, and acne, but it can also address sun damage and age spots. BBL uses filters to deliver different wavelengths of light to the skin, which allows for more precise targeting of specific concerns. It is more powerful than most IPLs so you should get results in 1-2 sessions instead of 5-6. And, interestingly, in a study from Stanford, BBL has been shown to restore many molecular features of young skin.
So, what are some of the key differences between IPL and BBL? One of the most significant is the range of concerns they can address. While both treatments can improve the appearance of hyperpigmentation, rosacea, and acne, BBL has the added benefit of being able to address sun damage and age spots. Additionally, because BBL uses more precise targeting of specific wavelengths of light, it is often able to achieve better results with fewer treatments than IPL. It can also be used for hair removal and is very effective at reducing the appearance of blood vessels.
In terms of side effects, both IPL and BBL therapy can cause redness, swelling, and mild discomfort immediately following treatment. However, these side effects typically subside within a few hours to a few days and BBL tends to have less downtime (in fact, very little downtime).
Overall, both IPL and BBL therapy are effective treatments for a variety of skin concerns. Choosing between the two treatments depends on the specific skin concern and individual preferences. We recommend the BBL treatment as it is more specific and customisable for your skin needs. We have also found quicker results from the treatment.
