AI vs Dermatologist: Can AI Replace Your Dermatologist?
If you type “analyse my skin” into ChatGPT and upload a photo of yourself, within seconds you’ll receive a detailed breakdown of your skin concerns with a personalised routine, depending on your skin type, budget, and specific concerns. We know a lot of people are doing this – we see it in clinic (not always accurate).
The appeal is obvious: AI is available 24/7, doesn’t require appointments, provides instant, often detailed responses, and costs nothing. For basic skincare education and general guidance, it’s understandable why so many people start here.
But can artificial intelligence truly replace dermatological expertise?
We understand why people turn to AI, but it can actually often fall short when it comes to treating their skin concerns.
We want you to feel informed, supported and comfortable in your skin, so here’s a guide to the dos and don’ts of relying on AI for your skincare guidance.
The Do’s and Don’ts of Using AI for Skincare
AI is available 24/7, doesn’t require appointments, provides instant, detailed responses, and costs nothing.
For basic skincare education and general guidance, it’s understandable why so many people start here.
DO Use AI For:
Learning about ingredients: AI can explain what niacinamide, retinol, or hyaluronic acid do and whether they suit your goals (be specific about your skin, age, goals etc).
Building basic routines: For straightforward needs (cleanser, moisturiser or SPF recommendations), AI can provide a starting point – however, if you have specific skin concerns, sensitive skin, or any health conditions then this does miss things/there will be inaccuracies.
Comparing products: It can understand the differences between similar products or suggest affordable alternatives.
DON’T Use AI For:
Diagnosing skin conditions: AI cannot reliably differentiate between eczema, psoriasis, fungal infections, or skin cancer, nor can it take into account your medical history (this is true to life – in clinic we have seen many people with an AI misdiagnosis).
Analysing suspicious moles or lesions: This requires an in-person dermoscopy by a trained dermatologist
Prescription guidance: AI shouldn’t advise on prescription treatments requiring medical supervision
Severe acne or persistent problems: If over-the-counter products haven’t worked after three months, you may need a professional assessment
Replacing medical consultations. AI is supplementary, never a substitute for dermatological expertise (15 years of medical training and real-life experience is necessary for something as complex as your skin).
Where AI Falls Short
AI cannot perform in-person examinations, assess skin texture by touch, or use a dermoscopy (a magnifying tool to examine moles). Or, obviously, remove moles or provide active treatment (yet!).
The lighting, photo quality, and angles of any picture you upload can dramatically affect what the AI “sees”. For example, a concerning mole might look benign in certain lighting, or normal skin might appear problematic.
AI also lacks the understanding of your medical history (medications, allergies, previous treatments), hormonal factors (pregnancy, menopause, PCOS), lifestyle context (stress, sleep, diet, occupation), and genetic predispositions. These factors critically inform treatment decisions.
Diagnostic accuracy is poor; it cannot distinguish between similar-appearing conditions (rosacea vs lupus rash, eczema vs psoriasis) or assess severity, which could require urgent intervention. Most importantly, AI cannot detect early skin cancer signs that dermatologists identify through years of training.
AI provides generic advice based on common scenarios, whereas our dermatologists adjust treatments based on how your individual skin responds, prescribe appropriate strengths of medication, can combine treatments strategically, and modify approaches when initial treatments fail.
Early detection of serious conditions, including skin cancer
AI can be a useful starting point for skincare education and routine building, but it’s not a replacement for medical expertise, particularly for diagnosing conditions, assessing concerning changes, or treating persistent problems.
While AI provides information, dermatologists provide diagnosis, treatment, and care.
If you’ve noticed changes in your skin that worry you, or want to chat to an expert in a safe, judgement-free space, call us on 0203 9411815, pop into our Kensington clinic or book a consultation. We’re always happy to help – regardless of whether you book an appointment with us or not – we would rather you have the correct guidance where possible.

I have had a very good experience with No. 23 Skin! Dr. Bhate and the medical team are attentive, kind, and knowledgeable. I was able to address various types of concerns - from skin health all the way to cosmetic ones. I highly recommend this dermatology clinic. It will always be my go-to in London.

I couldn’t recommend No 23 Skin highly enough. All staff are approachable, knowledgeable and reassuring. I have had different treatments and each of them have been well explained and professionally delivered. Shannon did my BBL and not only are the results fantastic, but I really enjoyed the sessions due to her warmth, friendliness and kindness. I would go back every week if I could!

I’m not exactly a massive skincare person and, having never been to a dermatologist before, I was definitely a bit out of my element. However, the team at 23 Skin was incredibly friendly and made me feel welcome right away.
Shannon was great, she talked me through the whole process and made sure I was comfortable the entire time. Dr Cherry was also very professional. She explained the logic behind my minor surgery, ensured I knew exactly what to expect, and gave me clear instructions for aftercare. They even set up a follow-up appointment to make sure everything was healing properly.
If you’re looking for a professional & friendly team that makes the whole experience easy and stress-free, I can’t recommend them enough

Lovely discreet clinic with welcoming staff, I had a BBL laser treatment and facial with Shannon, and she was really detail-oriented and personable, answered all my questions with no pushy sales approach. The treatment was explained really well, and she was clearly very knowledgeable, so I felt very comfortable the entire time. Shannon emailed the next day to check in, which I thought was great customer service - would highly recommend!

Excellent, expert advice by people who care. Words cannot express the level of attention and passion you find at this clinic. I have been struggling with my skin for as long as I can remember, dealing with acne and eczema as early as 11 years old. Shannon and Dr Cherry have helped me finally feel in control of my skin.
Recently, I completed the AviClear course with the lovely Shannon and I'm already noticing improvements. I definitely have less cystic spots and oiliness. In my consultation with Dr Armstrong, I received a detailed, thoughtful treatment plan as well. She listened to my concerns and answered all my questions with zero judgement (even if I asked the same question 100 times).
It is evident that everyone here is passionate about what they do and that is felt so strongly by the effort and empathy in their work. I refuse to trust my skin anywhere else. Thank you so much!!! I can't wait for my follow up!

The doctor was friendly and professional, the location is very convenient and discrete. There was a small hiccup in the admin process but the staff was friendly and quick to fix it.

Words cannot express how grateful I am to have found No. 23 Skin. I’ve been coming here to see Shannon for several years now for the signature facial treatments, and my skin looks unrecognisable.
The team is exceptionally attentive and are genuinely invested in your skin’s long-term health rather than focusing on the quick fixes. What I particularly value is also their honesty as they will never push products or treatments you don’t need, and their recommendations are always based on what will actually work for your skin which makes all the difference.
Every treatment feels incredibly tailored and they always take the time to explain what products they are using and why, which as someone with very sensitive skin immediately puts you at ease.
If you’re struggling with acne or want lasting results I cannot recommend No. 23 Skin highly enough. It has been a complete game-changer for my skin and is truly the best decision I’ve made: If there were an option to give more than five stars I would without hesitation.
