Adult Acne and Summer Breakouts

Acne isn’t just a teenage thing — and summer tends to bring out breakouts. With the combination of heat, humidity, sunscreen build-up, sweat, and lifestyle changes, we’re seeing more breakouts than ever in adults. In fact, one recent study found that 43% of people over 30 still experience acne. I know this first-hand and it is one of the reasons this clinic exists. Hopefully this post will help you tackle acne at home with the products our dermatologists most commonly recommend.

Why Summer Skin Struggles

Increased oil production, SPF residue, and bacteria on the skin all contribute to blocked pores and inflammation. For those already prone to breakouts — especially due to hormones or genetics — summer can tip things over the edge.

What products to use for breakouts

Keep your routine simple. We often see clients using too many products that clash or cause irritation.

Our dermatologists’ most recommended at-home acne products include:

  • Cleansers: Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser, CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser, or CeraVe Blemish Control. If you have dry skin go for the more hydrating cleansers… more oily, go for the Blemish Control.
  • Moisturiser: Effaclar Duo+M. Don’t skip the moisturiser, even with oily skin as your skin may try and over-compensate.
  • Targeted treatment: Acnecide (benzoyl peroxide gel), or if you want to spend a bit more, think about a retinol like Alpharet by Skinbetter (which we can help you get with a prescription if needed).
  • SPF: Heliocare 360 Oil-Free Gel SPF – love this. And also like the mineral tolerance fluid if you have sensitive skin.

Each of these supports barrier function while targeting breakouts and inflammation — without overwhelming the skin. You’ll notice that our dermatologists don’t recommend 100s of actives or products to be included. They stick to the science and what they know works. If you are using an active that is working for you, then great! But it may not work for everyone.
