Clear skin vs healthy skin: Are we chasing the wrong thing?

If you could pick between clear skin or healthy skin, which would you choose? And do you understand the difference?

The data from our recent survey of 101 women in London told an interesting story.

  • 62% of women listed clear skin, with no redness, pigmentation or breakouts,  as their number one priority
  • Healthy skin came in at less than half that, at 24%

It’s very revealing about how much importance we’re placing on having skin that looks a certain way, rather than on having it in its best condition.

It’s not vanity. It’s reality

Let’s be honest about where this comes from.

Skincare content is everywhere; it’s relentless, and an awful lot of it is built around a very specific, poreless, heavily filtered, texture-free complexion that, in actuality, is very difficult to achieve, and more often than not, isn’t real to begin with.

So it makes sense that clear has emerged as the main focus for consumers. Clear is visible, it shows up well on camera. Meanwhile, healthy skin is quieter; it’s your barrier working properly, skin that copes well with stress, weather, hormones, and life, but it’s much harder to sell in a 30-second TikTok.

Chasing clear can compromise skin health

What’s not said enough is that an aggressive pursuit of clear skin, whether that’s stacking acids, over-exfoliating, or not being patient enough for your retinol, can be the very thing that compromises healthy skin in the first place:

  • People are impatient, which often leads them to layer chemical acids in the hope they’ll work faster, or to copy the routine of someone online who has completely different skin
  • When overdone, you’re looking at a compromised skin barrier, increased sensitivity and inflammation. It ends up more irritated, and no clearer
  • Products don’t necessarily fail because they’re bad; sometimes they’re misunderstood, underused or have been cleverly marketed to leave people expecting unachievable results

Nobody accounts for the mental toll

When pursuing clear or healthy skin, the cost goes beyond a skincare budget, and when you’re chasing a result partly built on a filtered, curated, occasionally AI-smoothed image, being left with a compromised skin barrier can feel exhausting.

Unmet expectations compound, and a product that doesn’t deliver on its performance promises in an unrealistic timeframe doesn’t just cost money, but can chip away at self-esteem and confidence

When we look in the mirror up close at our skin, examining everything deemed an imperfection, it puts an enormous amount of pressure on our skincare routine to work in ways it may not be able to.

So, what’s the solution?

Healthy skin should always be a priority, and clarity will follow. Skin that’s properly hydrated, with a strong, intact barrier and a routine suited to what it actually needs (not what worked for a stranger with completely different skin) is the answer.

But it’s a slow process, with less Instagrammable results and a harder sell than serums promising to clear your skin in a matter of weeks.

This is exactly why a thorough consultation with a dermatologist is important.

You won’t find our team of experts recommending products based on what’s trending, but patients leave armed with personalised intel on what their skin is dealing with, what realistic results they can expect from an improved routine or in-clinic treatment, and what might be holding them back without realising it.

For anyone who’s been wondering why their skin isn’t matching their effort or expectations, that’s precisely what No23 Skin Clinic is here for. We’re experts. But first and foremost, we’re human. We’re easy to talk to. No medical jargon. No snooty language. We love what we do, and could spend hours chatting skincare with you. So drop us an email or call on 02039411815, anytime.
