Red, irritated, inflamed skin is not uncommon, but do you know if you’re experiencing eczema or rosacea?
Both conditions cause facial redness and discomfort, making them easy to confuse. But getting the diagnosis right matters, because what helps one can worsen the other.
As highly skilled dermatologists based in our West London clinic, we often see this mix-up among our patients. Here’s how to tell them apart and what actually works for each, from professional treatments to lifestyle management.
Eczema presents as dry, scaly patches with rough, thickened skin. In severe cases, it may ooze or crust. It can appear anywhere on the body, face, hands, elbows, knees, and often starts in childhood.
Rosacea appears as red patches on the face, with visible facial blood vessels. It’s common to experience irritated, dry, hot and tender skin, and even small, pus-filled bumps that can often be mistaken for acne.

Eczema causes intense itching, often worse at night. Your skin feels dry and tight, with flares typically occurring during stress or cold weather. In severe cases, the skin may crack and bleed.
It’s typically triggered by harsh soaps and detergents, cold dry weather, stress and even lack of sleep, certain fabrics like wool or synthetics, and environmental allergens such as dust mites and pollen.
Rosacea creates a burning or stinging sensation, and your face often feels hot. Flushing occurs after specific triggers like heat, wine, or spicy food. Rosacea flares are commonly triggered by hot drinks and spicy food, alcohol (especially red wine), temperature extremes, sun exposure, and stress.

At No. 23 Skin, we offer safe, evidence-based treatments that target both conditions, performed by our highly experienced team of dermatologists.
Book in for a consultation with one of the dermatologists in our West London clinic and we can accurately diagnose, create a personalised treatment plan, and help you manage triggers for lasting skin health.
For eczema, we can provide prescription-strength topical steroids, creams, and can recommend and refer to phototherapy for severe cases, and patch testing to identify specific allergens.
Meanwhile, for rosacea, the Sciton BBL laser treatment has proven very effective in reducing redness and visible blood vessels. There’s minimal downtime, and improvements can be seen in as few as 2 sessions. Read more about our BBL laser treatment here.
Where necessary, we can also prescribe other appropriate dermatologist medications for inflammatory rosacea, and personalised skincare plans tailored to your triggers.

Research on diet triggers for eczema varies individually, but some patients benefit from identifying food sensitivities through elimination. Keep a food diary if flares seem linked to eating certain foods.
Clear triggers for rosacea, however, include spicy foods, hot beverages, and alcohol (red wine is a common culprit).
The weather in London also plays a role in managing both eczema and rosacea. During colder, winter months, eczema can be exacerbated by dry air emitted from central heating and hot Tube carriages, while in the summer, excess heat and sweating can also cause symptoms to worsen.
Windy conditions can trigger rosacea flare-ups, so when it’s very cold and windy, we’d recommend protecting your face with a scarf when outside. Exposure to the sun’s UV rays can also irritate rosacea, so always wear an SPF50 and diligently reapply, and seek shade when possible.
We know how uncomfortable, and even painful, rosacea and eczema can be, as well as the toll it can take on your confidence.
If you’re unsure which you have, or if home care isn’t working, seeing our skilled dermatologists is the fastest route to healthy, happy skin.
