What to Expect From Your First Private Dermatologist Consultation in London

Navigating skin concerns can feel overwhelming — especially if you’re not sure what kind of appointment you need, or what happens when you finally sit down with a dermatologist. So, whether you’re seeking answers for acne, unexplained pigmentation, or just want a proactive check-in with a specialist — here’s a straightforward guide to help you feel prepared.

No jargon. No judgement. Just expert insights to help you feel informed before you step through the door (or log on for an online consultation).

  1. You can access expert skin support quickly

In most cases, you don’t need a GP referral to book with a private dermatologist. If you’re self-funding, you can simply choose your clinic and book in. That means no long waiting lists or unnecessary steps — just timely support for whatever’s bothering your skin.

Many of our patients tell us they waited too long to seek help — assuming they’d need a formal referral or that their issue ‘wasn’t bad enough’ (as I felt for many years despite my skin impacting me every day). But skin problems (from breakouts to melasma to chronic itch) deserve specialist care, even if they don’t look severe from the outside.

  1. What happens at a dermatologist consultation

The best dermatologists won’t just glance at your skin and prescribe a cream. They’ll take the time to understand what’s going on beneath the surface. Expect questions about your symptoms, lifestyle, current routine, medications, and overall health. Then a full examination of your skin will take place – don’t worry, this is done with sensitivity and compassion, and you can reapply make up after the appointment if that is important to you. The dermatologist may also use a dermatoscope (microscope for the skin) to examine more closely what is happening. They will talk you through and make sure you’re happy at every step, so there is a lot of time and opportunity to ask questions. Most private dermatology appointments are 30minutes long – albeit some other clinics work to 20min appointments.

For pigmentation and acne, in particular, personalisation is essential. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution — and a rushed or standardised approach often leads to frustration. At No. 23 Skin, we diagnose, treat, and help prevent future flare-ups — with a plan that’s unique to your skin and your goals. All good dermatologists should follow this structure so (in theory) you should be in safe hands whoever you choose, but we go above and beyond to make sure your journey is easy both in-and-outside of the appointment. Check out our (and other clinics) google reviews before choosing.

  1. Not all skin clinics are created equal

It’s worth doing your homework. The term “skin specialist” is used widely in the UK, but dermatology is a medical specialty. Always check that the person you’re seeing is a GMC-registered Consultant Dermatologist or a dermatology doctor who has many years experience — and ideally, one who has worked in NHS dermatology settings.

Equally important? Check that the clinic is CQC registered. This ensures they’re meeting high standards for medical safety, hygiene, and governance. Especially for procedures like mole removal, steroid injections, or prescription skincare — you want to be somewhere accountable.

  1.  You’re allowed to feel nervous

Whether you’re dealing with persistent acne, a sudden pigmentation patch, or a mole that’s changed shape — seeking help can feel exposing. That’s normal. A good clinic knows how to make the process feel simple, calm, and respectful.

We often hear from people who’ve had rushed or impersonal experiences elsewhere – “it felt like I was just a number and my appointment didn’t matter” is something we have heard an unfortunate amount of times. That’s exactly what we’re here to change. Our goal isn’t just to treat skin — it’s to help you feel looked after, every step of the way.

  1. Online appointments are becoming the norm

Dermatology is one of the few medical specialties where visual assessment plays a key role. That’s why online consultations — especially for acne and pigmentation — are now a popular first step. Take care of the providers you choose here (i.e. make sure you’re seeing a doctor and that they are able to prescribe you the medications you may need following the appointment – for example, systemic medications shouldn’t be prescribed online without being checked in person).

At No. 23 Skin, we offer virtual appointments with our doctors, which can help get your treatment started faster. And if we think something needs a closer look, we’ll arrange an in-person review with minimal delay. If you’re struggling with breakouts then this could be the quickest option for you.

  1.  Expect honesty — not hype

Great dermatologists won’t promise overnight results. If you’re struggling with hormonal acne, hyperpigmentation after sun exposure, or skin changes from perimenopause, there is always help — but it often takes time.

The most effective treatment plans are gradual, layered, and grounded in clinical evidence. It’s one of the reasons we exist as a clinic: to offer joined-up, realistic support that works for the long haul — not just a quick fix for this week’s flare-up. Make sure you come with all the questions you would like to ask the dermatologist – and that the clinic is happy to answer your questions after you leave. We see it all the time – where you have so much information in the appointment that you may forget one or two things that come to mind as soon as you walk out the door. We get that, so we are happy to help before and after your appointments.

  1. You’ll probably feel relief

We’re often told the biggest shift happens after the appointment. Not necessarily because the skin is instantly better — but because someone finally took the time to listen, validate the concern, and offer a way forward.

This is where online articles and forums can’t compete with specialist support. Dermatology is a science — but also a partnership. One that respects both your lived experience and the biology beneath it.

I know this first hand – I even worked in dermatology clinics and felt that I couldn’t raise my hand for help when my breakouts took hold. Opening a dermatology clinic is an extreme reaction to not getting the help and the support that I needed, but I hope our friendly clinic helps you take the step towards healthy skin.

Ready to take the next step?

Whether you’re booking a mole check, seeking treatment for adult acne, or want advice about pigmentation and skin tone — your first appointment is a powerful step toward clarity and control.

And if you’re still unsure? Reach out. We’re here to help you understand your options — even if that means pointing you somewhere else.
