How to Know When It’s Time to See a Private Dermatologist (And What to Expect When You Do)

Not sure whether you actually need a private dermatologist appointment? You’re not alone. For many people, the tipping point isn’t obvious. Breakouts might come and go. A mole might change slightly. A product that used to work just… stops.

Here’s the truth: you don’t need to wait for your skin to get “bad enough” to deserve expert care. A good dermatologist can help you understand what’s going on beneath the surface – and build a treatment plan that reflects your skin, your goals, and your lifestyle.

1. What does a private dermatologist actually do in an appointment?

Dermatologists are medically trained doctors who specialise in skin, hair and nails. They’re experts in diagnosing and treating everything from acne and pigmentation to rosacea, skin cancer, and hair loss. Some focus on medical concerns only; others (like us) also offer cosmetic treatments backed by evidence.

At No. 23 Skin, all our dermatologists are GMC-registered consultants who have also worked in the NHS. This means the care you get here is the same standard you’d receive in hospital — but delivered in a setting that feels a little calmer and more personal.

2. Signs you might need to see a dermatologist:

  • Acne that hasn’t responded to skincare or keeps coming back
  • Breakouts leaving marks or scarring
  • A mole that’s changed in shape, size or colour
  • Ongoing skin irritation or flares (e.g. eczema, rosacea)
  • Skin that’s reactive, itchy, or unusually sensitive
  • You’re spending a lot on skincare but not getting results

If any of these sound familiar, it might be time to stop guessing — and start diagnosing.

3. What happens during a private dermatologist appointment?

At No. 23 Skin, our approach is always personal, clinical, and clear. Here’s what to expect:

  • Step 1: We listen. You’ll talk through your skin story with one of our dermatologists, including any previous treatments, triggers, and goals.
  • Step 2: We examine. A full skin examination is carried out, which may include dermatoscopic mole checks, acne grading or diagnostic imaging.
  • Step 3: We plan. You’ll get a treatment plan tailored to your skin and lifestyle — this may include prescriptions, skincare, blood tests, in-clinic treatments or further monitoring. It’s thorough and effective, and importantly you have access to great administrative support alongside your treatment.

It’s joined-up skin health — and we stay with you throughout.

4. Do you need a referral to book a private dermatologist?

Nope. You can book directly with us online or by phone. We know time is tight, and waiting lists can be long. That’s why we offer same-week appointments for most of our services. Just a quick point here – if you’re booking private dermatology with Private Medical Insurance, please check and get an authorisation code from them before you book, just so you know they will cover you.

5. What conditions do we treat?

Here are some of the most common things people come to us/other dermatologists for:

We also support with acne scarring, pigmentation concerns, and pre-cancerous sun damage using evidence-based cosmetic treatments.

6. What to look for in a Private Dermatologist Appointment and Why choose No. 23 Skin?

Because we bring the hospital-level care and clinical excellence you deserve, but deliver it in a way that feels more human. We don’t do fads. We don’t rush you through. We offer straightforward advice, proven treatments, and warm, expert care.

We were founded by a woman (me!) who couldn’t find joined-up help for her own acne and scarring. So we built the clinic she needed: all the expertise, all in one place.

If you’re not able to come and see our dermatologists in London then look for the following points when booking:

  1. Do they have good reviews
  2. Is the dermatologist on the GMC register (important) and is the clinic registered with the CQC.
  3. Does the dermatologist have the right skills for you. For example, do they have additional training in an area like acne or hair loss, or skin cancer.
  4. What is the availablity and responsiveness of the clinic like? (give them a call and can they answer your questions – this helps give you a feel if you need follow up care).

Whether you’re new to skin health or just haven’t found the right fit yet, we’re here to help. Book online, visit us in Kensington, London, or drop us a line to chat with our care team first.
